Since three weeks have passed without anyone else admitting to
remembering the phrase I thought I remembered ("Dorothea, the older
by an hour"), I think we must adopt as a working hypothesis the
proposition that I am completely insane, or at least that I was
mistaken when I thought that, at the time of writing one of the books,
AR thought of the D's as twins.

I haven't had time in those three weeks to re-read all six books in
which the D's occur, so I haven't entirely given up hope that I'll
find the reference, but it seems most unlikely given the incredulity
expressed by Peter and the absence of response from others.

Maybe long ago I read a similar phrase in a book by some other author
about other characters, and the idea somehow got linked in my mind
to the D's.

Is anyone familiar with the Malcolm Saville books? I read a couple
of them in my early teens. He was influenced by AR and had a
pair of mixed-sex twins as regular characters.
Could that be what I'm thinking of?
(Incidentally I think they were identical twins, which is
biologically impossible for mixed-sex twins to be.)
