I'm with you Ike for part of your argument. I teach my soldiers true map and compass skills before I let them onto a GPS. On the other side, once you understand what to do if your technology fails, why not use it. This caching could be done just as effectively by traditional navigation skills. All you're doing is using the internet to identify places in the "woods" to visit. The rest of the experience is the same whether you use your lowtech compass, a cheap GPS or an expensive one. The whole idea seems like a fairly harmless reason to get outside and interact with other people globally.

I bet Ransome would have been putting caches all over the lake district and although in his day he would have had a compass, today he'd also use a GPS.
