I expect there were those who, way back when, thought a compass was something like witchcraft and believed the tried and true methods were better: One should use all possible tools to get the job done.

However, all available tools didn't find my lost anchor recently. The swivel shackle broke as the 44 pound Bruce was being winched over the bow roller one morning at the north end of Thetis Island just off the British Columbia coast. Down it went in about 40 feet. The GPS/chart plotter recorded the event, but with no diving equipment...
Then, three weeks later the MARGOLETTA went back to the spot, anchored, and a diver friend searched for about 30 minutes. Nothing. It was late afternoon / early evening, and the water was not clear.
So, another search is planned for the holiday season when the water is much clearer.
I don't have the lat long coordinates now, but I'll post them ASAP and there will be a cache for all TARS to find. A bottle of grog for the first TARS to find my anchor.
(As an aside, the bitter end of the anchor chain - 400 feet of 5/16" - was well secured in the chain locker. And, a spare anchor, a 40 pound Danforth was quickly shackled to the chain.)
