Hi, I'm very new to TarBoard, but only 30 years new to AR. My Mother read me SA before I was out of a cot... it obviously had an affect.

Regarding marking chains, my Royal Navy Manual of Seamanship 1937 edition states that naval anchor cables were marked with a piece of wire every shackle..... the shackle being a Royal Naval length of 12 1/2 fathoms.. so every 25 metres or so, not much use.

How about using the same markings as a leading line, leather (2 ends) at 2 fathoms, with 3 ends at 3 fathoms, white calico at 5 etc .. this comes straight from Sailing by E.F.Knight... I'm sure John would do it this way
