Here in the States I received my copy of JIBBOOMS AND BOBSTAYS yesterday. Of course, I have only had a chance to skim through it, but it certainly appears to be an interesting compilation of Swallows and Amazonsiana. I am sure that it will illuminate some aspects of the stories for a lubber like myself. In addition, I thought the book was quite attractively produced. I did notice a couple of things, however. In the Poetry and Poets section the compilers, unfortunately, seem to be no better historians than John Keats and perpetuate his error. No doubt the word "Cortez" has a finer sound to it and therefore better suits the context of the poem, but it was Balboa who stood on that peak in Darien, not Cortez. Perhaps it is as Keats wrote in another poem: "Must all beauty flee at one touch of cold philosophy" (I may not have the exact words, but that is the gist of it). And in the East Anglian glossary "warmints" seems a likely variant of "varmints" (see OED), which over here at least is often used to refer to mischievous children.
I am looking forward to reading the book at more leisure.
