There is a section in geography where one is taught the basics of separation of villages. I would think another important factor spacing out the pubs would be the distance that a human was prepared to walk each night to get a drink if you lived on a farm. Most of the old pubs would have served the farmers who needed a place to gather. I am not sure I would want to wlak more than about 2 miles for a beer.

Just a thought.
