I rather thought the Goblin's crew DID enter the Bristol Arms (not identified by name in the book) at Shotley, to buy Grog and phone Mother.

As for beers. As well as the excellent Adnams, I was on the Broads this summer, and enjoyed many a pint of Woodforde's Wherry. Brewed on (but hopefully not with) Salhouse Broad, and highly recommended.
