One does have to be careful when attaching a plaque to a tree, lest it be bent and eventually buried as the tree expands in girth. Our tree labels use screws, each with a spring around the screw that pushes the label away from the tree so it won't be engulfed. Every year we go around and loosen the screws so there will be room for the next year's growth.

The red maple label in the picture at this site uses a similar system:
