Never really thought of it before, but I agree - John Macnab has something of an AR feel to it - I could just imagine Nancy sending out the challenges to the neighbouring landowners - and the salmon-taking at least is very much something AR would have enjoyed. A sort-of grown up sequel to GN perhaps ? (alright, I know it was written well before GN, but you know what I mean).

There was a really good TV adaptation of it shown sometime in, I think, the 1970s - one of an occasional series which included works by Dornford Yates (She Fell Among Thieves) and Geoffrey Household (Rogue Male) - which as far as I know has never been released on video.
