The Andrew Grieg novel also has more than enough space for feisty women who can initiate action - no, I'm not going to say how because it's just so unexpected and wonderful when you read it for the first time! The Buchan is one of my favourite Buchans, but there's really very little for the women to do except be supportive love interests.
