Could this be "I know where I'm Going"?, a black-and-white movie made in 1945 by Michael Powell and starring a very young Wendy Hillier and Roger Livesey? I don't recall them meeting on the train, but the journey begins with Joan/Wendy going north on the night train, he certainly lives in a big old castle, I think he is on leave, and the whole thing is intensely romantic in the way that 39 STEPS and THE QUIET MAN is. And - just when you think it can't get any better - the bloomin' Glasgow Orpheus Choir turn up!
