John, I have imagined that the Coots were somehow separated from the truck quite early in the morning - perhaps when the adults' breakfast at some inn was cut short and the lads were away from the truck. Anyhow, this must have happened some distance from "The Lake" certainly further away than the railway station. Could have been at the market town mentioned in WH (which may be Kendal!).

It took the boys a good part of the day to walk to Rio, indeed when they got there people were on their way home from work and ISTR that lights were already on. In the meantime the Bonnka was unloaded, launched, the owner installed and Ratty found and befriended. The truck must have gone home another way - perhaps South alongside "The Lake" and home via Bigland.

Funny how "important" stuff like this doesn't seem to get onto TarBoard too often - well done for bringing it up.
