I agree with Jonathan. Once you get the reading "habit" started it tends to branch out. But I think it branches out within the same genre or even author, at least initially, and only gradually spreads further without exposure to other types of writing. Schools do expose one to other types of reading although if one isn't a reader it can be difficult.

But I think the biggest step is forming the notion that reading can be enjoyable if the book is interesting - the first step is always biggest. Then one can inadvertently find that other types of books are interesting as well. But it helps if you have the habit before you are introduced to the necessity.

I've got a relative who never reads - he was never introduced to reading as an enjoyable pastime, and in school did it only when required. And indeed he reads slowly and laboriously when he must, and it's not enjoyable for him. Something he WANTED to read early on would probably have made a tremendous difference - almost no matter what it was.
