Bonnka is a Norfolk word meaning very large, usually of a person.
The Death and Glories know that her name will not be understood elsewhere;

All the Collingwoods were friends of AR, including RG (Robin) and his father WG Collingwood. Robin was to become even more well-known as a philosopher. He was 6 years younger than AR and was instrumental in helping him to learn to sail. At the time of Ransome's court case involving Oscar Wilde and Lord Douglas Robin Collingwood offered Ransome his savings to pay for costs. Ransome was able to decline the offer.
