This is quite interesting. I expect there’s a lot in what Andrew is saying.

More than just being dated, wouldn’t the mood and tone of a story set during the war be utterly different? I'm far too young for that experience myself, but hearing my father talk about the war years, it seems that everything was different – even here in the US and we weren’t being bombed. I wonder, indeed, if it would be realistic at all for the kids to go off on an adventure during that time. We in the US have all sorts of visions of children being sent off to the country and the general sense of the “war effort.” If they weren’t one of those “refugees” themselves, they may have been asked to host some. Is that just Hollywood and the BBC or is that generally the right impression? It’s hard to imagine children off sailing or camping or hiking when all hell’s breaking loose elsewhere.
