I think that Nancy would be the last one anybody would want to
"snuggle up with". It's a tossup whether she would shout, "Jibboons and bobstays! What are you doing, you galoot!" or "Shiver my timbers! I'll string you up from the yardarm if you try that again!" Her already sunburned face would turn a deeper crimson in righteous indignation. John, or whoever was the unlucky suitor, would hang his head in shame and creep away to the lowest part of the bilges to nurse his offended ego in private. No, I just cannot see it. My imagination strains at Susan too. I can see her glance of withering contempt as she brusquely repulses her lover's advances and turns once more to the buttered eggs on the kitchen stove

But I could be wrong. The unlikeliest girls blossom into the fairest damsels. One day, perhaps, the adult Nancy, wearing a striking nautical ensemble with a full skirt and a saucy sailor hat, will smile fondly, recalling her childhoon days, as she strolls along the shores of the Lake in the North, hand in hand with her husband. Behind them, unattended, her children splash about with the oars of the Beckfoot rowing boat.
