Granted this summons up an image of the Ancient Mariner stopping one in three and demanding if they had ever heard of AR, and I doubt that very many of us actually did that. When I was a child I found the S&A series in the local library and was initially attracted by the lovely covers with all the illustrations from the book. Later as a teenager I worked in that same library for several months. The AR books definitely circulated - you could tell by the date stamps on the log page in the back (or front) inside cover. But I never met anybody who'd read them.
