Re "wishy-washy" music for the 1974 S&A Film. Sorry, but I can't agree at
all. Apart from the video of the film itself, I have the original soundtrack
LP, with commentary by the script's adaptor David Wood. I have always
felt that the music was very well scored (in an appropriately nautical
way) by a highly experienced and much respected composer, Wilfred
Josephs. His inventiveness in instrumentation, his humour, and sense
of childhood delight are admirable. I missed (perhaps it's just as well) the
'60s Beeb version, and I find the Coot Club/Big Six TV series music to
be very trite in comparison to the Josephs score. The problem with AR
musically is that we really only have shanties to go on, and this is what
Josephs has done very well.
