Yes, I clearly remember the BBC Children's Hour broadcast serialised readings of,atleast,PIGEON POST - chopped up into approx. 15 min segments, as I guess - read by David Davies, who was Uncle Mac's second in command. I enjoyed it in a low-key sort of way, as I'd already read the book. It would certainly be worth seeing if the Beeb has those old programmes stashed away somewhere. Come to think of it I have a friend who works for the BBC Library in Bristol, (she's a wonderful detective, did you know some of the Hancock's Half Hour shows are lost ??). I'll ask her.
You're right, though, reading aloud is easily the best way to do Ransome. We recently purchased the video of The Big Six, which is terrible in many ways. Liberties with the plot, bad interpretation of several of the characters, truly awful child acting -easily the best part was the clothes!
