"More an observer than a doer" Until things really need to be done. Then they get done. The happy ending to BS is entirely Dot's doing - she is the one who identifies the basis of the problem and the steps needed to overcome it, and then ensures that they are carried out logically and thoroughly, and finally effectively.

I believe that underneath the innocence she actually is potentially quite hard, but with the imagination and understanding which will keep this in proper balance. I think that in the grown up world she might well have outperformed the others - perhaps even as a lawyer herself?
