An interesting sidelight on the "American" / "Canadian" issue.

For a long time, Canadians travelling in Europe and elsewhere were at great pains to ensure that people knew they were Canadian, and not American (US-type thereof). There were many stories of Canadian students running into American ditto who had adopted Canadian camouflage.

My wife went to her Portuguese homeland this spring with her mother -- and found it useful to be taken for American -- because of the SARS-induced panic with Toronto as the villain.

Incidentally, I have heard a Mexican objecting to the use of "United States" for the USA, pointing out that his country is a "United States" as well.
