I would personally have no problem with calling myself something other than "American" but "USian" or "USAian" or Unitedstatesian" or whatever are awful, and more cumbersome things like "citizen of ..." are intractable. Of course a while back a president gave us "Merkan" and maybe we could use that.
But in fact people from other countries call us "Americans" even when we don't use or insist on the term ourselves, at this point.
