Thanks to those who contacted the Midlamds committee about the
1999 a.g.m., especially to the person who e mailed me about a
possible site near Oxford.I'm sorry I haven't replied personally, but
your message has disappeared into the bowels of potter, the Keele
god of electronic messages. Potter, I find is a capricous god with
a low sense of humour, perhaps I should feed him some hemp seeds.
You may know that we have decided to hold the big 'do' at Rudyard Lake
Staffordshire.
What's Staffordshire got to do with AR? you may ask. Well not much
now but it will have with all those TARS about in May 1999.
The lake itself is very pretty, about two miles long and shaped like
Coniston Water, but without alas, the islands. It has mature trees,
green meadows and hills behind.Half way up is a splendid house built
on stilts over the water. There is a steam launch and a minature
railway line running on one shore, the Staffordshire Way, ( a long
distance path)folows the other and leads into the Peak District.
The lake itself is a feeder to the canal system, the trip has been
done,but I think, only in a canoe.
Rock climbers need only be told that the Roaches are about six miles
away but the wallabies are now offically extinct.
Literary connections include, a cottage belonging to Ted Scott from
which AR caught a fish, Rudyard Kipling himself (named after his
parents' honeymoon spot)and Alan Garner, whose territory lies just
to the North. Incidentally if you get the relevant O.S. map and look
about four miles NE fropm Rudyard you will find a certain hidden
valley by the name of Swa***dale.
So we should not be short of things to do. We are planning ot rent the
sea scouts campsite which has access to the lake and should be a
suitable corroberree ground for junior elements.
Talking of which a mutiny has brokenout amongst midland juniors, some
of which have started an organisation called CHIC (CHildren for an
Independent Corrobereee). There has been talk of a children's camp
expeditions human sacrafice and a Battle of House Boat Bay.These
could all be red herrings though. Any juniors interested should get
in touch with Eliza Bolger (address etc. in Signals.)
Those who are built for comfort rather than speed may be relieved
to know that there are hotels aplenty in Rudyard itself, Leek
and surrounding towns and villages. Also, that the actual business
meeting may well be in a village hall.
There has been a plea that there should be 'fun for adults too.'
Have you any Ransomeish projects you have always wanted
to do? How about being G.A. for the day? After all someones got to
keep us up to scratch.
Now just go off and learn your lines and when you've got some ideas
we'd love to here from you.
Tonight we're going to party like its 1999!
