I was not attacking the use of modern urban accents. I was alleging that their use on nation-wide 'talk' radio (eg Radio 4) was totally inappropriate, although they may be completely at home on 'niche' programming. As to 'exclusiveness', I think there is evidence (published somewhere - sorry can't remember where - possibly Guardian article or such like) that modern 'street' accents are to a certain extent 'tribal', ie distinguishing 'us' from 'them'. If true, this is a social phenomenon which is being observed, and no criticism is implied. 'Code' may be an exaggeration I admit, but there is surely a 'jargon' element in the way whole sections of the populace speak.

(On a lighter note I hope, the fact that some of us have the name 'Peter' does not make it compulsory to be stroppy on Tarboard!)
