As to 'exclusiveness', I think there is evidence (published somewhere - sorry can't remember where - possibly Guardian article or such like) that modern 'street' accents are to a certain extent 'tribal', ie distinguishing 'us' from 'them'.

Ah okay; youth patois and the use of Kingston slang in London certainly is tribal and exclusive, but that's traditional- as in thieves' cant or cockney rhyming slang- and you'll hear none of it used by annnouncers on R4...

But believe me, go to Glasgow and on the street it's not tribal, it's just the way everybody speaks. I suppose that the main example of tribal cant in Glasgow would be the RP speech of the lawyers around Blythswood Square.

As for being called 'Peter'... Stroppy? Moi?
