The voices of news announcers should convey the news, not distract the listener by having notable regional variations.
But where are these national news announcers with strong regional accents?
The reality is that they don't exist. There are none. They are a pure invention of people trying to make a point in this discussion.
As for Sue Lawley, she's been around a long time. I suspect that if she'd started her presenting career a few years later, she'd quite likely have retained a touch of her 'native' accent. But nowadays it would be her choice.
