I have a strong objection about trying to block the so-called mockery of other people/races/accents, etc. Canada has become so devastatingly PC that the government seems to be intent on making avery comment that might conceivably offend someone a "hate crime." If anyone mocks the Canadian accent I would simply laugh - that is, if anyone on the eastern side of the Atlantic knows what a Canadian accent sounds like. Sometimes I imitate the Irish or the Glaswegian accent and my friends just laugh, among them a woman from Glasgow who mocks the English because of it. I think sensitivity to this sort of thing is overdone. I am reminded of an article that appeared in the Vancouver Sun a few years ago, commenting on the sturdy Scots attitude to most things. The article mentioned that if anyone takes a poke at Scotland or the Scots, any Scot in the neighbourhood would retaliate on his own against the "puir wee mannie." Now, that's the attitude I like. Fight back. Don't sit and whine about how you have been hurt, which, increasingly, seems to be the Canadian attitude. Well, I hope I have offended a few people, because wimps like that deserve to be offended. Incidentally, Duffer is a golf term that refers to a rank beginner to the game or someone who misses a dead easy shot. Pretty soon using the term duffer will be a "hate crime."
