One sentence in your posting struck me. "the sight of the endless parade of mindless crud on multichannel TV may well be depressing." I wonder what you would think of Canadian TV. American TV is bad enough (like American beer) but imagine something worse by a factor of ten, then multiply that by around 120 channels. We actually watch American TV as a relief from Canadian TV - that's how bad it is. The CBC tries to do a good job, but we simply haven't got the talent, the imagination or the ambition. The CBC supports four channels in our area, the rest come from somewhere, mostly the U.S. You know what they say - nothing ever happens in Canada except government and snow. Hard to relate all this to AR though.
