Ah, but remember that 'not fit to eat' is a very cultural term. Once, I believe, the handy way to tell if a pheasant had been hung (aged) long enough was that the body would drop from the neck. That squashy thud was nature's way of saying 'stoke up the barbee, she's ready to grill!'
Even today, various cultures regard each other's delicacies with mingled fascination/disgust (eg. Poi, Fried Grasshoppers, the Big Mac, etc.)
