Back in the 60s, a Brisbane friend told me that in Melbourne, you were asked What school did you go to?
, in Sydney What do you earn?
and in Brisbane What will you have?
Perhaps this is no longer true. I have just got home from Australia, where I was struck by the variety of accents on the TV. Some would have passed for BBC, others were almost a parody of Strine.
