I must admit that it is very surprising to hear all the negative comments about the BBC. As I explore their website, I am continually amazed at the range and depth of programming. Apart from a few community radio stations and the public radio network, US radio stations are a vast desert of lousy music and obnoxious DJs (the exception being some college radio stations that play interesting stuff). As John Lambert asserts, our television is just as bad, saved only by the few channels David mentioned and public television – and even there, most (but not all) of the good stuff comes from Britain. We no longer get cable beyond the basic channels and only that because it basically comes free with our internet connection. With a seven-month old, we have virtually no time to watch it anyway.

The very notion that you have an entire radio channel (seemingly) devoted to literature is astounding (with AR programs, no less). Were that the case here! So, you may feel the BBC is slipping, but it represents a mighty pinnacle compared to the US. I am devoted to my internet radio now and am thrilled to be able to get the BBC.
