Hard to argue with someones published account - but the ages Mr. Wardales gives
do not make a lot of sense. Peggy is the same age as John and two years older
than Susan? In the books Susan is certainly more mature than Peggy. I suppose
you might say that Peggy is a young 12, John an old 12 and Susan an old 10.
Further the ages posted have only a year between Susan and Titty. Maybe
my view of them is tainted by the movie actors in Swallows and Amazons
Forever but I have a very hard time swallowing (pun) a three year difference
in age between Susan and Nancy. I would suggest that it is more likely
that Susan and Peggy are about the same age with Susan being older.

I might also point out that if Nancy's age is 13 in S&A then by Great Northren
(about 4 years later) she would be 17, and in Picts and Martyrs she would have
been 16. This age might fit with Mrs Blackett leaving them with only Cook
about but really calls into question GA dropping everything to come look
after them - if we drop a year off of Nancy's age then she is 15 and Peggy is
14 - still reasonable to be left with Cook in charge, and GA deciding to
come keep an eye on them.

Ah, isn't speculation wonderful.

Mark
