Nancy is “wet and piebald” when she arrives at night at the Dog’s Home with Timothy’s message, in “bathers” because of the rain and not wanting the GA to find wet clothes (PM). Captain Flint is described as surrounded by a group of piebald pigmy savages ie the S & As in “bathers” (SA or SD).
The Concise Oxford Dictionary says of PIEBALD (adj): “1. usually of an animal esp. a horse, having irregular patches of two colours, esp. black and white. 2. motley, mongrel”. As a noun a piebald animal esp. a horse.
