Not that this little story will add much to the discussion, but I always thought piebald meant simply two or more colours giving a mottled appearance. I well remember the first time I ever saw a woman in a bikini. She was sitting on the sand - or rather gravel - at English Bay in Vancouver. At that time, bikinis were illegal, so after watching a constant parade of young men approach her and try to start a conversation, a policeman came along, sqatted dwon next to her and also engaged her in conversation. Her appearance, which had already been mottled red and blue, deepened, and she became distincly piebald. She gave a self-conscious smile, wrapped a towel around her shoulders and slouched off the beach. The policeman gave a satisfied smile, and strolled away, his duty done. I thought then how attractive she might have been if her colour had been more flesh-like, instead of covered with blue and red patches because of the earliness of the season. My opinion has not changed with the passing years.
