Exactly. The shyness was a plot device- and a very useful one.
But the idea that AR was John (or the other way about) doesn't quite chime with the "Bohemia in London" side. As always, it's much more complicated, and he used the available material (which of course included himself) in ways that were shaped a great deal by the technical requirements of producing a lengthening series of books.
