At the risk of going "off topic", although shorts are still worn extensively in the Royal Navy in hot climates, in ships and ashore as part of formal and less formal uniforms, they would never be worn in a war theatre where there is a risk of attack - then its white action coveralls, anti-flash gear, etc. As a follow-up to the comment about burns resulting from exposed skin, in the Falklands conflict where people were protected by anti-flash hoods, some of those who had their names written on their hoods had the names burnt on to their skin as a result of heat and flash. The white anti-flash material is surpringly effective if kept clean and unmarked - and , in my experience, very good for beekeeping too!

Now, how's that for deviating from Winter Holiday?!
