Yes, but these had been immaculate while being worn on a cruiser in a very dangerous war zone - where in fact she was torpedoed.

Clearly a Lieutenant Commander had to keep up appearances at all times.

There is the story (to get even more off the subject) of a British Liaison officer on board the Japanese flagship at the Battle of Tsu Shima who was showered with blood when somebody close to him was killed. He immediately went below, to the derision of the Japanese, which turned to admiration when he quickly reappeared dressed again in immaculate whites.
