I have used divining to find extant and dried up underground water courses on archaeological sites - particularly in central Europe. When all other methods fail, you try everything and it was pretty successful on the various occasions. I used two bent metal bars - not wood - so I don't know whether that made any difference to the success rate! They swung inwards whenever I crossed the water course and we were able to mark out the run of the channel across a long distance. This was after I had read PP and so was putting AR to the test, so to speak! The locals were very impressed!
