Apologies for this off-topic post, but we have discussed Childers and Riddle here before, so I’m taking the liberty of bringing that subject up again.

Thanks to the archives on BBC 4’s Book at Bedtime site, I was able to enjoy Crispin Bonham-Carter’s reading of an abridged version of Riddle of the Sands. I normally listened to it the next morning after walking the dogs and heading off to work (sacrificing some newspaper-reading time). Did anyone else catch that? I’m not much of a books-on-tape person, and I’m not really used to hearing books read aloud (other than when my wife and I read a book to each other). So I don’t have much to compare it to, but I very much enjoyed the production.

The only disappointment was in the abridging - they dropped virtually all descriptions of the sailing and much of the scenery. Predictably, they focused on the mystery and the romance. That makes sense, but I wonder if Bonham-Carter had stepped up the pace a bit (I thought a few passages lacked excitement due to a rather measured reading), they might have been able to squeeze in more about some of the sailing.

My father just returned my copy of the movie, so I am gearing up for a complete trio, having recently re-read the book and heard the reading I am now ready to see the film again (perhaps during my wife's next book club night).
