Having been on both, I have to agree with Brigit. Just as The Lake is an amalgam of Windermere and Coniston Water, and Wild Cat Island is largely Peel with a little of Blake Holme, so I suspect AR took aspects of Gondola and of Esperance. He didn't seem to like his scenes to be pinned down (except, interestingly, in the Broads, where everything has its real name and is described accurately -- any suggestions why East Anglia should have been different?)
