If you are in the Northern Hemishphere and North of the Tropic of Cancer, the sun is always south of you, even in summer. Hence the navigation by time and shadow that Roger and Dick performed in PP. The reverse applies in the Southern Hemisphere when you are South of the Tropic of Capricorn.
