But surely not swinging as freely as a compass needle?

Come to think of it, why don't dowsers use compasses - why don't they use ready-made, cheap devices that have been engineered to react to electromagnetic fields, instead of making their own devices? I think the most obvious answer is that the dowsing effect is not caused by electromagnetic fields. It seems reasonable that research should consider alternate explanations.
