I compared the same passage in a Macmillan and Co. 1943 edition of PM with a Red Fox edition and a Godine edition with reference to the spelling of gybe or jibe. The earlier Macmillan had JIBE; the other two which are much later have GYBE.

Maybe it is a spelling standard of different publishers.

Maybe rules of spelling change over time.

And we wonder why peoples of other cultures find learning English, especially its spelling, to be rather difficult.
