Traditionally, it's the first day (or first weekday) after Christmas when gifts or "boxes" are given to employees or letter carriers, etc. In the USA, I think the term's been corrupted to signify the day following Christmas when unwanted, ill-fitting gifts are boxed up and returned or exchanged.
