I hear what John has to say, but for me car rental is the way to go. I've rented cars in the UK several times and love the challenge, the little roads, and all the little villages and pubs. The secret is having two on board - one to drive and one to navigate, and lots of excellent maps. One really can't drive that far in say a week, so fuel prices don't amount to that much. One can save by booking ahead from this side of the Pond.
By the way, who first called the Pond the Pond?
