439 occurances of "until" in the 12 books of Ransome.

Not a hard and fast rule, but it seems that "till" is used in
recording quoted speech, and "until" is used in author's descriptions.
Some exceptions to both rules of course, but that seems to be the
dominate usage, as if the "till" is intended as a sort of dialect,
and "until" is the way Ransome speaks. Then look at the exceptions and the whole set of so-called rules go out the window. Maybe having a character say "until" was just the author forgetting to slip into dialect on this one point. But then again, considering local dialects of England, what do I know... Me no spekada English, only merican.
