Its not as bad as it looks, honest. There are ways and means for a small boat. The rivers have bends in them so the wind frees off (sometimes, other times it funnels straight at you). Sometimes the loss of way on tacking isnt made up on each beat and its a slow drift into the bank. Then there are the oars! I've never used an iron topsail on my Wayfarer.
Finally, some of us do take up our fenders.
