Just try it in one of the classic Broads racing yachts - like the fabulous Maidie, about 40 feet long, 15 feet of bowsprit and the best part of a thousand square feet of sail, capable of 10 knots + (I exaggerate but not much). The Hullabaloos tend to get out of the way. Racing one of these things in a big fleet in a narrow river makes something like the Fastnet seem a vicarage tea party.
One of the advantages of these rivers is that when you tack close to the bank you can sail straight into the wind for several lengths. I don't know why - perhaps the canal effect, but I have managed to pass quite good opposition in races by doing this.
