While reading a backnumber of "Yachting Monthly" from 1967, I came across a report from the Norfolk Broads;
"A moorhen held up trials of an experimental jet-propelled motor cruiser on the Broads. Workmen were all set to take the baot out for trials when one of them spotted a nest on the jet - a moorhen had laid two eggs. The yard workmen adopted the bird, feeding her by hand, and the cruiser was left moored until the chicks had hatched."
Doubtless the workmen concerned were named Bill, Pete, and Joe!
It made me think though, that perhaps AR was not so much ahead of his time as giving a voice on behalf of the natives of the broadland and their ethos regarding caring for the wildlife and noisy intruders in their idyllic world.
