I think there is a slight misunderstanding about the photo of AMAZON.
John states that it "has a ROD for a tiller" but I think perhaps his description is a bit misleading.

The picture shows the TILLER to be a piece of wood, a bit thicker than the handle of an axe, the end being thrust into a square opening in the vertical shaft of the rudder, much like an axe handle is thrust into a square opening in the iron head of the axe.

The RUDDER is hinged about a vertical IRON ROD held stationary just off the stern.

The photo was made of the AMAZON on display at some museum in the Lake District - exactly where, I'm sure some of you know better about that than I.
